Chanel’s guide to footy feasting with a crowd

Game faces on!

Its winter time and that means we are entering into the major sporting season! No matter your game of choice; Aussie rules, Basketball, Rugby, Soccer etc sport and food always go hand in hand, especially if you’re celebrating with a few match drinks! Select what type of feasting (share board, build your own burger board, all mexican etc) you’ll be enjoying and follow the steps below…

>>PRE GAME PREP
You never know who will be knocking at your front door to join in to cheer on your team or rival, so it is important to have a stock for those unexpected guests.
Shop with a purpose; pantry items such as dried fruit, nuts, honey, preserves, olives, biscuits and crackers all play a helping hand at filling up those platters. In the fridge I always have tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, dips, pastes and a variety of cheese. Cold cuts and fresh fruit and bread I will buy on the day or the day prior to ensure they are as fresh as possible and buy according to what is in season – this also applies to anything I am cooking for our feast such as meatballs or mini pizzas. Back up freezer goodies can also be helpful for those still celebrating into the late hours!

>>THE WARM UP
Prep work so you don’t miss out on the start of the action!
Shop in the morning and prepare yourself for quick assembly later on. Chop up your carrots and cucumbers and place in a container, make your guac with some extra lemon as to not turn brown, mix up your meatball mixture and roll ready to fry, roll or fold your cold cuts and glad them up, bake those doughnuts cool and keep in an airtight container etc
You can even place any dips/olives into their serving bowls, wrap and keep in the fridge!

>>HALF TIME SPRAY
When you’re not at the game to get your hands on a 4n20 pie! GET THE BOARD READY!!!
Depending on what you are serving and how many fans have shown up at your front door, selecting the correct size board/serve wear means less waste and presented deliciously! Now get plating and arranging before the 3rd quarter begins!

>>3RD QUARTER JITTERS
Something sweet to keep the energy
If you have not included anything sweet with your half time feast, now is the perfect time to bring out a little sugar.
Have this all prepared like your main board, some sweets such as cakes and fresh fruit can be all plated up ready to rip the glad wrap off and serve!
Don’t forget a spiked coffee to accompany those treats or combine it into an affogato with a dash of amaretti liquor!

>>POST GAME CELEBRATIONS
Celebration time!!!… we hope!
The clean up – now remembering that most of the food (if not all completely consumed) has been out for a few hours now. Better to be safe than sorry as my mum says, its really not worth keeping much due to contamination/food poisoning. If you are using wooden serving boards, handy tip; only clean these with soapy water and a soft sponge to prevent them for scratching!
