The best advice I ever received in Venice
was to go and get lost!
How best to discover such a heavily tourist populated beautiful town? Follow the locals! Found a bowl of pasta that is still one of my favourites to this day.
Getting lost…
Upon arriving on Venice Island, we were consumed with the overwhelming amount of tourists flooding the streets early September, like the waters do come winter. Stopping to ask a local gentleman making venetian masks [this is a rare sight!] he advised us to get off the commonly walked path and follow some locals into the hidden allies. What a treat this turned out to be!!! One of the most incredible bowls of pasta smothered in cherry tomatoes, zucchini and sweet delicious scampi is something I can still taste to this day while sitting in the warming sunshine by the sea. Top this off with a good bottle of red and minimal crowds, oh what a day!
Upon our strolls away from the main drag accompanied by Daniah and Kirsty, dessert was quickly served! The fresh nougat known in Italy as torrone, was in an absolute array of flavours of sour cherries, pistachio nuts, almonds, candied fruit and chocolate swirls. I am a big soft torrone fan and this did not disappoint.
Venice also saw the beginning of one exciting experience I sweet talked Daniah [pictured right] into almost on the daily that she soon became very accustomed to… espressos at the bar! Coffee is as much of an importance in the day to day routine as sharing a meal with another person! Tip, the location you indulge in your coffee will change the price you pay. The bar €1, take a seat to people watch may set your coffee experience back €5!
Almost time to farewell 2 very quick days in Venice would not be complete without a wood fired thin crust pizza topped with an array of Mediterranean vegetables and vino! Minimal toppings and good ingredients meant that a pizza purchased on mainland Venice was absolute perfection.
